When I was in Nigeria in 1991 our hosts organised a visit to a hospital.  As we waited for doctors to come down we were in a room normally reserved for patients.  On the wall was a list of instructions.  One of them struck me in particular – ‘As well as receiving medical treatment pray for your own healing.  We can treat you but only God can heal you.’

I was thinking of that recently when I met a leading heart surgeon, also from Nigeria.  He said that sometimes they do an operation on a patient, and all goes very well medically but the patient is not getting better.  The doctor said that when that happens, he tells the patient to pray to their own God to help them to receive all the healing they need.  I think that is very good advice because praying in faith can really quicken up the whole healing process.
